Making your cake tres-leches style is one option. In a pie plate or casserole dish—something with walls—place the dry cake layer.

Make several holes in the cake with a toothpick or fork. This allows the liquid to enter the surface at specific spots. 

Once the cake is covered, pour the sweetened milk over it until it reaches a quarter-inch of the way along the sides.
